What is OEE and Why Every Manufacturer Should Track It

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the gold standard metric for measuring manufacturing productivity. Developed as part of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), OEE gives you a single percentage that tells you how efficiently your manufacturing equipment is being used.

The OEE Formula

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

  • Availability: The percentage of scheduled time the equipment is actually running
  • Performance: How fast the equipment runs compared to its ideal speed
  • Quality: The percentage of parts produced that meet quality standards

A perfect OEE score of 100% means you're manufacturing only good parts, as fast as possible, with no downtime.

What is World-Class OEE?

  • 85%+ is considered world-class for discrete manufacturing
  • 60% is typical for many manufacturers when they first start tracking
  • 40% is where most manufacturers actually are before implementing proper monitoring

Why AI Makes OEE Actionable

Traditional OEE tracking is done manually — operators fill in paper forms at the end of shifts. By the time you see the data, the opportunity to fix the problem has passed.

With Vortinx's real-time OEE platform, you connect directly to machines via WebSocket and OPC-UA protocols. Every micro-stoppage, speed loss, and quality defect is captured in real-time, giving you the data you need to act immediately.
